“Ananas Noire” (Lycopersicon esculentum”Ananas Noire”) is a tomato variety whose French title translates as”black pineapple.” A medium to large tomato,”Ananas Noire” comes with an inside streaked with numerous colors, including pink, yellow, green and red. When fully ripe, its exterior turns dark purple with a deep green blush and green shoulders, hence the”noire” in its title. As with other tomatoes,”Ananas Noire” is grown as an annual in all U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones.
Characteristics
“Ananas Noire” is a beefsteak tomato, so that the plants bear large, somewhat flattened, kidney-shaped fruit with bumps or ridges. The flesh is meaty with tender ribs. The fruit is tasty when eaten fresh, traditionally in big, thick pieces, and makes good sauce. “Ananas Noire” tomatoes are unusually soft, with a creamy texture, so they do not keep well and should be utilized as soon as possible after harvest.
Flavor
Black tomatoes boast a taste described as deep, rich and smoky, and”Ananas Noire” is no exception. An opportunity cross using a bicolor red and yellow tomato, its own balanced sweet-acidic taste has a hint of citrus or, for some, pineapple. The pulp is juicy and has few seeds. “Ananas Noire” is a late-season tomato, taking from 75 to 85 days to ripen and develop full flavor from transplanting.
History
This combination between an unknown black tomato and a”Pineapple” tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum”Pineapple”) happened in Belgium, at a field of”Pineapple” tomatoes cultivated by Pascal Moreau, a Belgian horticulturalist. Moreau further developed the hybrid and released it to market in 2005. It regularly scores high marks in tomato taste tests. The swirl of colors in the tomato’s interior and the ribbed shape are features of”Pineapple” tomatoes.
Growing
“Ananas Noire” is a indeterminate tomato variety, meaning that the plant continues to grow until killed by frost, reaching about 6 ft tall in a year. Indeterminate tomato plants tend to sprawl, and the fruit of”Ananas Noire” weighs from 1 to 2 lbs, so the plants need to be well staked or increased indoors strong tomato cages. The plants yield greatly. Growing conditions like soil type, sunlight and water, affect the taste of berries for example as”Ananas Noire.”
