Squirrels are cute little critters when you visit them from a distance, bouncing from limb to limb and chasing each other about. But when they start building nests in places that disrupt the household, such as in your gutters, then they lose their appeal. You must find a way to encourage the squirrels to make a home elsewhere to stop gutter overflow and possible damage to the landscaping under.
Provide a place for squirrels to live. Sometimes squirrels set up residence in gutters since they have no other safe choices. Plant trees and shrubbery to make a safe place for them to live. Since shrubs are low to the ground, you can find them closer into the house without much stress of the creatures with them to climb to the roof. But locate trees further away. Take into consideration the mature spread of the tree limbs at full growth and add 10 or more feet to that number. Anything that equals is how far off the tree should be from the house. This will make sure that the squirrels can’t get to the roof.
Add predator urine around spouts and also as gutters to dissuade tiny creatures, since they don’t like the smell. Soak rags using the liquid and set them beneath your landscape mulch around. You can typically find the supplies you need at a farm supply store.
Clean out debris which squirrels are using to nest in your gutter system. Use a hose to wash off leaves, nuts, twigs and other natural material. Set the hose down into downspouts to wash them outside as well.
Trim back branches which are near the house and permit squirrels to jump from the divisions and onto the roof.
Cover downspout holes with wire mesh to keep squirrels from accessing them. Cut the mesh to fit within the gutter and lay across the hole. Cut a length long enough to cover the base of the gutter for many feet on both sides. Use wire cutters to trim the mesh to fit. As a bonus it will keep large leaves out of the spouts as well.
Add wire mesh throughout the very top of the gutters all over the house if it is affordable for you. Rather than keeping squirrels out of spouts, this will keep them out of the gutters entirely. Attach the mesh into the tops of their gutters using 1-inch metallic screws.
Cover the bottom of downspouts with wire mesh. Cover the opening and bend the mesh up both sides. Attach the mesh into the sides of the spout with 1-inch screws.
