5 Homes That Spotlight Art

Among my favorite things about cruising tours and photos is becoming a glimpse of some spectacular personal art collections. Some have pieces worth countless have treasures found at flea markets, some were made by the homeowners, while some others were made by friends and family members. However homeowners have collected their artwork, the collections generally have one thing in common: They are priceless to their owners. Here’s a look at five homes we’ve toured where artwork sets play a major role in the decoration.

1. A Washington, D.C., condominium. This gorgeous home was designed around an impressive collection, with white walls, contemporary railings, rich flooring and lighting all highlighting the artwork.

Upstairs, a loft houses the master bedroom space and the research space. A large white and black bit from Richard Serra dominates one wall.

A handblown glass mosaic by Graham Caldwell was placed to make the most of the atrium’s mild and can be enjoyed from both levels of the condominium.

2. An open loft in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. consumer Gil Rigaud was overrun by distance and stuff from his 3,000-square-foot home, so he picked out his very favorite things and downsized for this airy loft. He brought texture and color to the white walls along with his impressive Haitian artwork collection. A found artwork piece hangs on the wall to the right, and a part of his Buddha collection is placed on the shelves.

This colorful piece over the mattress is by Haitian artist St. Pierre. It provides the low platform bed a larger presence and lets it hold its own against the high ceilings.

Creativity runs in Rigaud’s family. While he’s a excellent amateur interior designer, his mother, Jeanne Rigaud, has taken up painting. Both of the works in this media room are hers.

3. A 1940s home in Omaha, Nebraska. Homeowners Christopher and Jessica McKay have filled their home with arty finds. As interior design consultants, they love to mix eras and styles throughout their home, and this also extends to their artwork collection.

The McKays service local artists and host art openings at their own studio. This painting is by Omaha artist Cristina Renfer Vogel.

White and black pin-striped walls are a bold backdrop for the ideal works.

4. A split-level in Chicago. This couple hastens with sharp eyes for artwork but they never lose their sense of playfulness. The suspended flying guy is by Jonathan Forrest Read, and it seems he enjoys watching TV with the gang.

At first glance, I thought those egg heads on the side table might be Fornasetti, but it turns out that they are classic condom holders.

The couple’s art collection includes many sculptures in all sizes and shapes. This bronze sculpture, Ladder — Seven Climbers, is by artist Bill Starke.

The set of sculptures from the dining room were produced by an art student at Indiana University. The wife picked them up at a gallery when she was a college student.

5. A midcentury beach home in Orange County, California. This home near the beach has a Palm Springs contemporary feel that lends itself nicely to displaying artwork. Case in point: This glossy and mild hallway can manage three paintings which could easily overwhelm another space.

On the dining area’s contemporary console table is a striking work by Mario Wagner. It was a surprise birthday gift from the husband to his wife, along with other pieces in the room pick upon its color palette.

Iconic furniture and street-inspired artwork mix this up in this bedroom. From left to right, work by Sticky Shaw, The Date Farmers and Clayton Brothers (click photo to view whole view).
