How to Measure a Sink Drain Opening for a Crumb Cup

When you shop for things for your new kitchen, don’t forget that the humble crumb cup. For only a few dollars, you can save yourself countless clogged drains and cluttered sessions using a plumbing snake. Before you go into the store, gauge the drain opening in your sink to ascertain which size cup you need. Drains are generally broadest at the top and narrower a little ways to the drain, so be sure to measure the width and the depth to find a crumb cup that fits correctly.

Measure the drain opening across its widest part. This provides the drain circle’s width to you.

Add the end of the measuring tape to the drain. Measure the depth of this opening. This provides you the maximum depth for the cup. Do not measure in the center of the drain — the base surface may incline, and you need to quantify its shallowest point.

Notice the dimensions on a piece of paper and take them with you when you look to get a crumb cup. Choose a cup with a lip marginally wider along with a basket marginally narrower than the drain opening. It also needs to be slightly shallower than the drain, so it will not rest on the base of the drain and then trickle up in the sink basin.
